THE HISTORY OF

       ROCKWALL WOMEN'S LEAGUE

When Patsy Hendrickson invited six friends to her home in September 1973 to discuss starting a woman’s organization in Rockwall, her concept was simple: do good and have fun. Many years later, that group of friends has evolved into a vibrant, service-oriented group of women who work side-by-side with Rockwall businesses and residents to produce the largest annual fundraiser in Rockwall County and contribute thousands of volunteer hours to area social service agencies.

In 1980, when Women’s League hosted its first fundraiser, the event was held at Chandler’s Landing.  Some 300 people attended the Mardi Gras-themed ball, dancing to the sound of Starfire and enjoying a midnight breakfast buffet.  Raffle items included Chinese vases from Clements Antiques and artwork by local artists including Donald Mitchell and Electra Malone. Women’s League members were ecstatic when their work netted almost $5,000, which the group donated to local charities.

Back in 1973 when fewer than 4,000 people lived in Rockwall, everyone knew each other and neighbors helped neighbors. But by the 1980s,Lake Ray Hubbard had been created, Rockwall’s population had mushroomed and  Helping Hands had been founded. With its yearly disbursement to the Helping Hands Children's Medical Fund, Rockwall Women’s League has helped hundreds of children who would otherwise have gone without medical care, prescribed medicine, eyeglasses, dental care and counseling services.  RWL also helps organize the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and contributes countless hours to the school district, Helping Hands Food Pantry, Rainbow Room and other area nonprofits.    Rockwall Women’s League has made a tremendous difference in the lives of many young people and their families by awarding scholarships to graduating Seniors. The scholarships not only help students financially, but give them confidence in pursuing higher education and enable them to be role models for other students in the Rockwall community.

Today, Rockwall Women's League members are a diverse and enthusiastic group, continuing the tradition of service to the community, the League and their families.
